MEET DANIEL ROSENBLUM
Monday, January 24, 2005 - Christopher DeWolf

Scenes from New York's Chinatown. Photos by Daniel Rosenblum.

Daniel Rosenblum is a twenty-year old journalism and American Studies student at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He's also an urban photographer. His photos can be seen at his pbase gallery, Kid Jersey, or in occasional instalments at the Skyscraper Forum. Our favourite collections? Daniel's Housin' on Houston photos of downtown Manhattan are especially delightful and his recent trip to Philadelphia's long-abandoned Reading Terminal Viaduct yielded some impressive results as well.

Walker Evans' Depression-era subway portraits are now famous. Photo courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Subway trains, buses, streetcars ― these are some of the best places to capture the city's faces and emotions, its energy. Some of the best urban photography has come from subways; in fact, many of our own contributors and forumers have taken their best shots on rapid transit. (Coming soon, in fact, is a feature photoessay by Brad Maule that will explore Philadelphia's subways and commuter trains.)

That tradition of transit photography, however, is in jeopardy. As the New York Times reports, that city's transit agency is set to prohibit subway photography in an effort to prevent a future terrorist attack. "Much of the attention on the ban has been focused on tourists who take innocuous snapshots," writes the Times. "But its most profound effects may be on the artists and documentary makers chronicling life as it moves through the subway system, even though officials say these artists could get permits to continue their work."

Unfortunately, the official comment period on the proposed ban that began in November has expired. You can still follow the latest developments on nycsubway.org or email your thoughts to a variety of transit officials and elected representatives listed on the site.
