IN THE HEART OF TSIM SHA TSUI

Tsim Sha Tsui is one of those
neighbourhoods that isn't quite sure what it is. Towards the
waterfront, it's a glitzy tourist ghetto, an easy-to-digest
dish of museums, upscale shopping malls and big hotels. Indian
tailor shops, restaurants and sleazy nightclubs crowd some
backstreets; others are lined by clothing stores both chic and
cheap. Nathan Road, meanwhile, brusquely shoves its way
through the heart of the district, a clamourous parade of
tourists, businesspeople, Indian touts and the new immigrants
and refugees who live in the street's vast, mysterious
guesthouse complexes.
The largest of these, Chungking
Mansions, provided the backdrop for Wong Kar Wai's brilliant
1995 film Chungking Express. Outside, it looks fairly
unremarkable, just another huge postwar building plastered
with billboards and a giant video screen. But the crowd
mingling out front, and the constant stream of people coming
and going from the building's main entrance, give away the
Mansions' true vocation as a home and place of business for
thousands of South Asians and Africans. Robust women in
brightly-coloured dresses drag suitcases; young Indian guys
yell "Tailor suit!" at passers-by and, if they ignore them,
run up and whisper, "Copy watch?" Inside Chungking Mansions, a
gritty commercial arcade sells shoes, jewellery, Indian food
and the latest sights and sounds from Bollywood.
