Green roof in the McGill Ghetto, Montreal. Christopher
DeWolf.
This Friday, March 10th,
Montreal's Urban Ecology Centre will be hosting Turning
Green: Roofs, neighbourhoods, cities, a one-day conference
on green roofs. Learn more about the benefits of green roofs
and how Montreal's thousands of flat gravel rooftops can be
transformed into oases that insulate buildings, tame the
summer heat, reduce runoff from rain and make for really cool
places to hang out. To find out more, visit the
Urban Ecology Centre
website.
Back in October, I wrote a
Maisonneuve column on the Urban Ecology Centre's
experimental green roof in the McGill Ghetto. Built on top of
a century-old duplex, the green roof is designed to test
different plant types and hydration systems to see which one
is best-adapted to the Montreal environment. The ultimate goal
is to give Montrealers an example of how a typical flat roof
can be greened with no disruption to the apartments below. So
far, the trend is catching on. New institutional buildings and
even some new condo developments can boast of green roofs.
It'll probably take awhile before we see the vast expanse of
flat, grey roofs that dominate Montreal's cityscape
transformed into useful green spaces, but the day will
eventually come.
