I love the S-Bahn trip from Zoo to Alexanderplatz, although the extended waits at stations gets quite annoying - but I suppose that’s the trade off for that trademark German efficiency.

Alastair- I agree. That journey is thrilling; it really gives one a rare sense of Berlin’s epic proportions. A similar feeling can be obtained on the elevated portion of the U1 (I think) between Hallesches Tor and Wittenbergplatz. The other stretch of the U1, through Kreutzberg before Warschauerstrasse, probably affords the most intimate views.
