I love the S-Bahn trip from Zoo to Alexanderplatz, although the extended waits at stations gets quite annoying – but I suppose that’s the trade off for that trademark German efficiency.

Alastair- I agree. That journey is thrilling; it really gives one a rare sense of Berlin’s epic proportions. You can get a similar feeling on the elevated portion of the U1 between Hallesches Tor and Wittenbergplatz.
