A Few Guangzhou Scenes

Posted in Asia Pacific, Public Space by Desmond Bliek

Shuttlecock in the park

One of many groups on a weekday morning, in a beautiful lakeside park in north-central Guangzhou.

Sticky summer days in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Guangzhou’s an old city with lots of outdoor life, especially in the parks and smaller neighbourhood streets.

Building walls

Mahjong players on Guangzhou’s Shamian Island, once the European district. The set back buildings create a many wonderful places to while away a summer afternoon playing mahjong.

At the temple

Lighting incense in front of a Guangzhou temple.

I really liked how in the older parts of older, more established Chinese cities people seem to live their entire life on the street: entertaining people., entertaining themselves, eating, hanging, airing their most personal pieces of laundry. In contrast in the newer parts, the purposedly-built squares often seem strangely desolate and unappealing. They need as much help with city building as we do.
