I believe the oldest synagogue building in North America is the the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island and was built in 1759. There is a synagogue from 1732 in Curacao.

That doesn't sound right to me, either, since the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue was established in 1768. Maybe the building on Chenneville St. was the first purpose-built synagogue in North America?

The caption below the picture on that pamphlet cover says that the building was the oldest synagogue on the American continent. (That doesn't sound quite right, though, as the caption clearly identifies it as being on Chenneville St., but the Chenneville building was apparently the congregation's second.)

The caption also calls Shearith Israel by its more commonly used name, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue. They are now on St. Kevin St., but there is a prayer sanctuary in the basement built to look what the Stanley St. one looked like, and I believe the ark in fact comes from Stanley St. there (or so I have heard). This is the smaller sanctuary used by a French-Moroccan congregation.
